About Us
The Radio Cab Foundation
The Radio Cab Foundation is a relatively new organization, grown from the ideology
and perseverance of a small group of individuals and has blossomed into a
community-wide effort. While the Foundation itself is new, our presence in the
community and what we believe in is not.
In the winter of 1996, one of our Radio Cab Co drivers, David Yandell, became
aware of a group of individuals and families in our communities that most of us hardly
ever think of, until we find ourselves in their shoes. They are the victims of tragedies
caused by everyday life. People like yourself, your closest friend, or your neighbor
who’s Life has been turned upside-down by some personal tragedy.
Most of us are only a paycheck or two away from being homeless ourselves. Many
of our local area family’s lives are affected by unexpected medical bills or a sudden
lay-off during the Holiday Season. David wanted to empower the families he saw to
have the holiday meal that they would most likely be going without. He and some his
fellow drivers got together and provided almost 50 turkeys dinners that first year.
Most of the dinners were delivered without request and the recipients had no idea
they were coming. They went to the families of customers who had ridden in a Radio
Cab recently, or a neighbor down the street. With this random act of kindness, the
Radio Cab “Turkey Project” was born.
After seeing so many surprised and thankful faces and feeling the love we inspired in
the community, we became addicted to empowering people not unlike ourselves; our
customers, friends and neighbors that seemed to have, for one reason or another,
temporarily fallen through the cracks. For the last nine years the Radio Cab “Turkey
Project” has helped countless families during the holidays by having the community
write us letters, telling us of a family in need, and every year the number of people
asking for our assistance grows. The Radio Cab “Turkey Project” helped an
estimated 960 families in the Portland/Metro area in 2004. In addition to the “Turkey
Project”, Radio Cab Co has been involved with other driver inspired projects and
events over the years, from giving backpacks full of school supplies to students and
schools in the Portland area, to providing elementary school children with their first
bicycles and helmets.
In 2005, Radio Cab Co. established the Radio Cab Foundation to bring all of these
different causes under one umbrella to better help the community. The Radio Cab
Foundation is a 501-(C) (3), accepting tax deductible donations in the Portland/Metro
area. Although set up originally as a food bank, we help many families, individuals
and organizations with many different types of projects throughout the year. We are
a 100% volunteer organization with a simple philosophy; to empower those less
fortunate than ourselves to deal with Life’s struggles in whatever way we can.
